Child Care Subsidy in Coquitlam: How the Affordable Child Care Benefit Works (2026)
If you’re a Coquitlam parent looking at daycare costs, you’ve probably asked the same question as everyone else: is there government help paying for daycare? Yes, there is. The catch is that there’s more than one program, and the names are confusing.
The main child care subsidy in Coquitlam is the Affordable Child Care Benefit, run by the Province of BC. Some fee reductions are applied automatically by participating providers, and two federal tax items help too.
We’re Stars Childcare, a licensed family daycare in the Westwood Plateau neighbourhood of Coquitlam. We’ve cared for Tri-Cities families since 1994, so these questions come up often. Rules change, so please confirm details on the official pages we link.
Who Pays for What: Child Care Help in Coquitlam
- Affordable Child Care Benefit (ACCB): provincial. A monthly payment based on income, family size and type of care. You apply for it.
- Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative (CCFRI): provincial. Participating licensed providers lower their monthly fees. You don’t apply.
- $10 a Day ChildCareBC centres: provincial. A limited set of approved centres where full-time care costs no more than $200 a month per child.
- Canada Child Benefit and the child care expense deduction: federal, through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
So is it provincial or federal? Both, but you deal with the province. The federal government helps fund BC’s fee reductions through a Canada-wide early learning and child care agreement. Coquitlam parents don’t apply to Ottawa for daycare fees.
The Affordable Child Care Benefit for Coquitlam Families
The ACCB is the subsidy most Coquitlam parents mean when they say "child care subsidy." It’s a monthly payment. The amount depends on your income, your family size and the type of care.
Who Qualifies for the ACCB in Coquitlam
According to the province’s eligibility page, you need to:
- Live in BC.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, Convention refugee or person in need of protection.
- Need care for a qualifying reason, such as work, school, a job search program, a medical condition or a licensed preschool.
Maternity or parental leave is not a qualifying reason.
Families earning up to $111,000 may qualify. Larger families and children with support needs can qualify above that. The highest benefit goes to lower-income families, and it drops as income rises.
How Much the ACCB Pays for Licensed Family Child Care in Coquitlam
The province lists maximum monthly amounts by age and type of care. As of September 2026, the maximums for licensed family child care are:
- Under 19 months: $1,000
- 19 to 36 months: $1,000
- 37 months to school age: $550
- School age: $415
Group care has higher amounts for the youngest children. These are maximums, not promises, and the benefit only pays for care your child receives. Check the official rates page for current numbers, or try the province’s benefit estimator for a personal estimate. It’s a guide, not a guarantee.
Does It Work With Licensed Family Daycare in Coquitlam?
The province lists licensed family child care as its own category, and most licensed care qualifies. Unlicensed care by a family member in your own household, drop-in care and occasional care don’t qualify.
Your provider signs the Child Care Arrangement form with you. Providers handle paperwork differently, so ask yours directly. If you’re considering us, ask Shala whether Stars accepts the Affordable Child Care Benefit and how it would work for your family.
How to Apply for the Child Care Subsidy in Coquitlam
The steps below follow the province’s application guide.
- Choose your provider. You and the provider complete the Child Care Arrangement form (CF2798).
- Gather your documents. You’ll need ID for your family, proof of your reason for care (such as a work or school letter), and a consent for the province to check your CRA records.
- Apply online through My Family Services. A paper application is available if you can’t apply online.
- Mind the timing. Apply before the end of the month in which you need care. Once you start, you have 60 days to finish. Online applications take about 10 business days. Mail or fax takes three weeks or longer.
- Renew every year. The province suggests renewing about 30 days before your plan expires.
Missing documents slow everything down, so upload them all at the start. The Child Care Service Centre answers questions at 1-888-338-6622 (option 1).
The YMCA Child Care Resource and Referral office serves Coquitlam and can help you find licensed care. Its details are on the province’s CCRR directory.
Fee Reductions and $10 a Day Centres in Coquitlam
This part happens without an application. Under the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative, the province gives funding to participating licensed providers, who then lower your monthly fee. Provider participation is voluntary.
As of September 2026, the maximum monthly reductions for full-time care in a family child care setting are $600 per child under 36 months and $500 per child from age 3 to kindergarten. Group care has higher maximums. Part-time reductions are pro-rated. Families earning up to $111,000 can also apply for the ACCB on top.
To see if a provider takes part, use the province’s fee reduction estimator or child care map. Both are linked from that page. For Stars, please ask Shala.
$10 a Day centres work differently. The province lists approved centres, and Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody all appear on its list. Spaces depend on each centre’s capacity and waitlist. News reports from February 2026 say the province paused adding new $10 a Day centres for three years, so don’t count on new ones opening soon. Check the province’s official $10 a Day page for the latest.
Federal Tax Help for Coquitlam Parents
Two federal items sit outside the daycare system. This isn’t tax advice, so talk to an accountant about your situation.
The Canada Child Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment from the CRA for children under 18, whether or not your child is in daycare. Check the CRA site for current amounts.
The child care expense deduction lets you deduct child care costs you paid so you could work or go to school. Yearly limits apply per child, and they depend on age. Confirm the current limits on the CRA’s child care expenses page and keep your receipts. A tax professional can tell you how any government help affects what you claim.
What to Ask Your Coquitlam Daycare Before You Count on a Subsidy
A subsidy only helps if your provider can work with it. Bring these questions to your visit:
- Do you accept the Affordable Child Care Benefit and sign the arrangement form?
- Do you take part in the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative?
- What’s the earliest start date? The ACCB only pays for care your child receives, so apply before your start month ends.
